One of New Zealand’s main exports (apart from cow milk) is the reputable DJ Rob Warner. With over 15 years of experience, he has headlined dozens of events and often shares the bill with top DJs such as Danny Howells, Steve Lawler, Deep Dish and Pete Heller.

The Kiwi was grounded in the New York garage/tribal/house sound but soon developed his own blend of deep, bumping, funky, twisted music which he refers to as Future Garage.

Excited? Well you should be… because the man himself will be spinning at the 42-BELOW Party@Centro KL on 11 Dec (Thurs) 2008. Party starts at 10pm onwards. Cover charge is RM 35 before midnight and RM 45 after. Free entry for ladies. More at www.centrokl.com

So come on down and sneak a peak into Future Garage with DJ Rob Warner!

Christmas is brought early to us this year by the good people over at Smartie Partie. A force to be reckoned with in the London party scene, Smartie Partie is sharing a slice of their partying pie with us this coming 19 and 20 December. That’s right. Not one, but two days. Founder-cum-percussionist of Smartie Partie Trace Harris will be gracing our shores with 4 of their top DJs: Alex Miles, Lisa German, Matty Wells and Ramone. Of course we can’t forget their troupe of dancers: Emma, Karleen, Jodie and Kirstie, who we’re picturing, from their names and occupations alone, to be Megan Fox hot. The 2-day event kicks off at sundown Saturday 19 December and will feature special DJs G-mix from Hitz.fm and Sashi Blue. Don’t miss out. We reckon people will be talking about this event well through the new year.

Tickets are selling at RM95/night and RM130 for both nights. Available at all Ticketpro outlets, call 03 7880 7999 to book your tix. If you decide to purchase your tickets at the door, be ready to shell out RM120. So get them while you can.

Funny girl Joanne Kam Poh Poh will be cracking up the clubbers at Zouk starting this Friday (21 Nov).
Mixing laughs with music over the course of the next 3 months, K.A.M.@Velvet (short for Kam And Mambo at Velvet Underground) will see the jovial comedian performing an hour long set every fortnightly Friday. The risque performer will be teasing themes such as retro, Bollywood, Christmas and even infamous la-la Ah Lians.
She’ll be accompanied with dancers and a selection of her celebrity chumps in a caberet-like performance with live audience participation (beware shy people!)…

Accapella trio Luscious will be rounding off each show with their sultry vocals.
So come on over for a laugh and warm yourself up to a night of clubbing funness… :)

15 bands turned it up last Thursday night as they battled for the chance to represent the country at The Global Battle of the Bands World Finals in London. Held at Planet Hollywood, the event, sponsored by Jack Daniel’s and voize.my, was the biggest live music competition and featured talents from all over the country. After 3 months of elimination heats, the finalists strutted their stuff to a full house that night.

Starting at about 10pm, the show slowly became an endurance test. The bands ranged from awesome to good to okay to down right horrible - some of them should’ve been escorted out of the venue right after their performances and executed on Jln B.Bintang. The announcers also managed to annoy many with their JD hard-selling during band set-ups; delaying the show which ended around 2am!

In the end, modern alternative folk band, Lab Rat took the title. They were followed by The Federated (Johor fun-core) in second position and Rock ‘n’ Roll John (Sepang-speed rock) in third.

JUICE was impressed by The Federated (aka Aisunam) whose witty lyrics poked fun at colonialism (Aku tak makan tempir / Aku makan Burger McDonald). And Rock ‘n’ Roll John who sounded like early-Beatles on speed. Trashy glam rockers, Pink Acid also stood out in full colour and were definitely the best dressed band of the night.

Perhaps the next time a competition of this scale is atempted, the organisers should do more quality control on the bands and cut down the number of finalists. It was unfair that many bands had to play to a half-dead audience. Ironically, the winners, Lab Rats were the last band on that night.

T’was the weekend after the JUICE DJ Quest and we were bushed. So what better way to recuperate ourselves than by taking a road trip to the quaint scenic town of Kuala Kubu Baru; where we stuffed our lungs with fresh mountain air and did some cow watching….

That Saturday night, we pondered deep thoughts in a friend’s apartment and listened to two Pavement albums back to back… The ’90s were great times, my friend…

Our flashback didn’t end there. Instead, it led to Free Love’s Album Launch at Clof & Clef the next day. Free Love, a lo-fi power-pop band hailing from a slightly more well-known quaint scenic town, Ipoh, were joined by the likes of The Jeffry (from Sg Siput), Couple  and Killeur Calculateur.

Cutesy indie-pop and math-rock hardcore aside, there was also a special guest band from Jakarta called Denial. And man, did they remind us of the Velvet Underground. They wore black, sunglasses, never smiled and had a chick member playing tambourine and smoking in the corner (Nico?). They were noisy, the crowd didn’t get them, the bartenders gave nasty looks… it was beautiful.
But that Sunday evening belonged to Free Love. It was, after all, their album launch. Bursting out with ‘Thursday Riot’, they continued with a slew of sing-along songs from their album, ending their set with the charming ‘Indie Rock Darling‘.

You came, you chilled to sultry house beats, you splashed around in the pool. And maybe you just so happened to take home with you more than a good day out? And by that we mean a yellow rubber ducky. Or all of them. As you all may know, for each rubber ducky floating merrily away by the end of the night, RM 3 will be donated to the Yellow House Society. So it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that no rubber duckies means zero donations to the charity. Think of the innocent children suffering because your itchy fingers just had to snag a yellow rubber ducky. Or two. Or all of them. Paragon Events is offering a generous reward for the return of their yellow rubbery friends. Give them back their Quack Quack. You can contact Neuron at 0166959663 or Pulse at 0126985284 if you know of the poor duckies’ whereabouts.

JUICE congratulates Loops Collective on its 9th anniversary, held recently at Cloth & Clef.

The collective lead by the industrious DJ Low has been nurturing and promoting the local Drum n Bass scene for nearly a decade.

Instead of thumping beats as expected from DnB, the party had a more chilled out atmosphere with DJs spinning classic tunes. Among the DJs that night was JUICE DJ Quest 2008 winner, DJ Anowl.

Apart from the day-old Halloween decor, the party proved that DnB was still a much loved affair with its ever-supportive fans.

Remember the song that goes like “I like big butts and I cannot lie?”, yea that’s Sir Mix A Lot’s Baby Got Back. And yea, that’s song remains a classic either good or bad. But now, fast forward to the present comes a remix by Richard Cheese. He takes a more traditional classical approach to this song and outcomes a pretty soothing version of Baby Got Back. Who says instrumental music could be boring?

Hello Kiddies!
Although Halloween was more than a week ago, it took JUICE a while to get out from the twilight zone. As such, this post is a bit overdue but worth mentioning nonetheless.

SCREAM at the Sunway Lagoon Theme park was a rocking creepy party held by the sweetest of liquors, Southern Comfort.

The event started early but the crowd was scarce, mostly made up from college kids. An enthusiastic bunch, most of them came dressed for the occasion, in bondage, medical uniforms and every other creature of the dark you can think of.

Things started to pick up once the bands went on. Beat The System and Y2K were doing their usually rocking, except they were place unwittingly on the balcony above the audience, which meant the crowd could hardly see the bands (except for the singers who brave the heights and stood on the edge - luckily, they didn’t plunge to their untimely deaths!).

JUICE DJ Quest runner-up, DJ N.Droid laid down the beats and brought in the rest of the crowd that night with his own brand of spunky Nu Rave. The highpoint of the night was when a ghoulish head-bopping zombie (Mr Creepy) strutted slowly to the middle of the dancefloor and soon got the kids imitating his undead booty shaking. Everyone wanted to have their picture taken with the cool stiff later!

All in, apart from hiccups in planning, the party was great and the kids never looked better (dead)!

As most of us were sleeping through History classes during school, it’s no wonder there’s a general lack of knowledge and enthusiasm when it comes to dealing with the events of the past that shaped our nation.
The Annexe@Central Market recently played host to the Emergency Festival, which was aimed at revisiting and re-investigating the events of Malaysia’s Emergency Period - a time when the nation was still in the gripe of the so-called “great Communist threat”.
Curated by Five Arts Centre, it was a 16 day multi-art, multi-spaced event with the dynamic participation of some of Malaysia’s most controversial creative personalities. Different forms of art were used to unconventionally tell tales from both sides. These include plays, films, workshops, exhibitions, musical performances and even an emergency disco!
It was an enlightening experience and one could not help but feel neglected that this was not part of our rudimentary education syllabus.

You think Games like Red Alert, Crysis, and Dota is hard, but that’s all too fancy smanshy. Get yourself playing The World’s Hardest Game, it’s really simple. It kinda resembles the back-in-the-day-classic Pong, but tougher. It’s just a simple game of moving dots, squares, anything you’ll find in a retro video game.

We tried and have died, many many times.
If you think you have what it takes, try your luck HERE.
